The Maasai Mara game sanctuary is probably Kenya's most frequented game sanctuary. It is the most renowned and most patronized game reserve in Kenya.
Virtually all types of wildlife can be viewed at the Mara. The park is teeming with wildlife with about 452 species documented here. Hot air balloon safaris are readily available in this park.
The Masai people who inhabit the Mara and its surrounding are highly independent people who still appreciate tradition and ritual as an essential part of their lives. They regard themselves not just as residents of this area but that they are as much a part of the life of the land as the land is a part of their lives.
Typically, the Masai rarely hunt and living together with wildlife in harmony is a critical part of their beliefs. Lions and Wildebeest have a vital role in their cultural doctrine as their own herds of cattle. This special co-existence of man and wildlife makes this Masai land essentially the world's most unique wilderness regions.
Each year the Mara plays host to the world's greatest natural scene, the Great Wildebeest Migration from the Serengeti. From July to October, the promise of rainfall and fresh life giving grass in the north brings upwards of 1.3 million Wildebeest together into a single massive herd. They pour across the border into the Mara, making a spectacular entry in a flowing column of life that extends from horizon to horizon.
At the Mara River they mass together on the banks before eventually plunging forward through the raging waters, creating frenzy as they struggle against swift currents and waiting crocodiles.
The wildebeest bring brand new life to the Mara, not just through their cycle of regeneration of the grasslands, but also for the predators that follow the herds.
The Masai Mara has been called the Kingdom of Lions and these regal and potent hunters dominate these grasslands. Cheetahs are also a frequent sight in the Mara, as are Hyena and smaller predators such as Jackals.
The Mara is a wonderful natural beauty, a place where Masai warriors share the plains with hunting lions, a place of mighty herds and constant cycles of life, death and rebirth.
Wildlife move freely in and out of the reserve and through neighboring Masai lands. On the outside of the boundaries of the reserve, can be found many small camp sites and lodges, some of which have walking, horse riding and other safari choices.
The Loita Hills and the Nguruman hills, both regarded as sacred to the Masai, provide high forest trekking opportunities for the adventurous traveller.
How to get there:
Road entry to Masai Mara is through Narok town, a 3 hours drive from Nairobi. You may decide to fly to the Mara, which is serviced by 4 man airstrips. Daily scheduled flights from Nairobi and Mombasa are readily available. Private Charters also use these airstrips. Accessing the Mara area is difficult without private transport.
Masai Mara Safari:
Most travellers visit Masai Mara as part of a safari package from Nairobi or in a rented car. The park has well set up internal roads and tracks. Accessing areas outside the reserve is only possible using general public transport, and finding the right path around can be tough.
