Gap Year: A Notion
What exactly is a gap year? It's a phrase you hear more and more often these days, and it talks about of the time period that some young individuals accept after graduating from high school and before continuing with their study. They use this time to be employed, perhaps to travel, or even to combine work or travel with some volunteering. It's their opportunity to acquire something about the world before they launch into their full adult professions.
There are many reasons why a junior learner might aspire to take some months off in this way. This year can be a youth travel experience that shapes what the young individual does for the rest of their life.
Not every culture encourages students to take gap years, however. Denmark, for example, actively discourages the phenomenon, thinking that their society and economy require students to get into the work force faster. So the country pushes them toward continuing with their educational pursuits instead. Nor is the practice very common in the US, although it is increasing slowly.
However, the lessons learned by students when they take this break will probably be valuable to them for the rest of their lives. They'll return to their higher learning as more mature, adult people, probably with a more authentic and understanding view of the wider world than they'd ever had before. Taking that gap year might turn out to be the best thing they could have done for themselves.
