When cardiovascular disease occurs, a form of enzyme will accelerate the production of free radicals in the artery endothelium, thus amplifies the level of free radicals in arteries sharply. Green tea EGCG will inhibit the enzymes needed in the production of the free radicals and thus shields the endothelium from damaged by free radical. Hence green tea is playing a crucial role in preventing cardiovascular disease.
EGCG also serves in preventing the death of heart muscle cells following ischemia/reperfusion injury, by blocking the stimulation of inflammation compounds (STAT-1) that will cause oxidative damage which kills heart cell in reperfusion injury.
Besides, cancer cells need enzyme dihydrofolate reductase (DHFR) to build DNA and grow. EGCG will inhibit the DHFR and is effectively obstructing the grow of cancer cells.
Furthermore, EGCG could also accelerate the healing of damaged heart cells, and in this way allowing fast recovery of tissues and alleviating organs injury.
