Same Day Dentures
When I was a small girl I thought that only elder people wore dentures. After all, my granny had upper dentures, and all of grandpa's teeth were duplicate. I never thought that I could be wearing dentures while I was still a young person.
I was thirty three years old when I had to have the remainder of my teeth removed, all nine of them. My teeth have never been healthy and they were gradually removed one after the other. Except for the four front upper teeth which went all together and the new teeth were straight away set in their spot and attached with the teeth next to them. But, eventually they all had to go.
When the last nine teeth were extracted I had the dentures set immediately. I did not want to be without teeth.
Somehow I thought it would be problematic to get used to having new teeth in my mouth since being without them for quite a while. Eventually, I found this to be correct. By having the dentures placed immediately upon extraction, I was never without teeth so the dentures are as if my natural teeth.
I have to admit that having the dentures placed immediately after extraction was difficult but only considering that I could not clean them myself for around three weeks. I had to visit the dentist's office where he pulled out the denture, cleaned it and returned it, during the time that the gums were healing.
After three weeks I was able to do this myself. In the beginning the task was an odd one. Removing the dentures and cleaning them and replacing them. But it did have its one light time.
At that time my youngest boy was about four years old. He walked into the bathroom one day just as I was scrubbing my denture. He stood there with his eyes and mouth full open, then turned around and ran out of the house as fast as he could. He ran down the block to my girlfriend's house shouting as loud as he could "Aunt Mary, Aunt Mary, guess what my mommy can do?" When he explained her what I could do she walked him to my house and we both explained dentures to him. That I was not automatically taking out my natural teeth. We still giggle about that, so many years after.
I still believe that the best way to place your denture is immediately after extraction (sometimes called same day dentures today) because you are never without teeth. You never ever have to go through that period of getting used to having teeth, as you would need to do if you go without dentures when your gums are healing. What amazes me most is that when I have to go without my dentures (surgery, etc.) my jaw really hurts as it has never been closed without teeth. That tight close is always very painful.
I have found out that dentures are not mainly for old people because they are intended for youngsters also. As I said, at age thirty three I had my upper dentures. Since then I figured out that there are children that usually have to have dentures as a result of accidents or illness.
